Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis signed off from social media with a warning of “awful winter bills” to come.

The journalist and consumer campaigner has spent much of the recent months warning of the devastating effects of the forthcoming energy cap rise, which will see bills rise by an average 77%. Earlier this week, he said:

Mr Lewis issued a direct plea to the outgoing Prime Minister and his two potential replacements to agree how to help those who are going to be worst affected. An incoming measure to knock £400 off energy bills across winter was announced before the latest, and much worse, forecasts and Mr Lewis says the situation is “desperate”.

He said: “Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Boris Johnson, if you’re listening, please, go and sit in a room together, make a collective decision now of what help you can give and make an announcement now to forestall the mental damage that is coming across the country,” he said. “There needs to be action now.”

Bracing for the struggles ahead, Mr Lewis told his followers that he is now taking a break until the latest price rise in confirmed.

He posted: “And then there was quiet. For a few weeks, I’m going off social to focus on being a dad, a husband & to recharge m’batteries – so I’m on form to help when the awful winter bills hit people. I’ll be back for the day the new price cap’s announced

“Take care. Enjoy August’s warmth!”
