The cost of living crisis is hitting most of us hard, but fortunately for consumers Martin Lewis’ Money Saving Expert has offered top tips on how to save money. The cost of petrol is just one expense that has been hitting struggling families at the moment, but with this handy tool you can save up to £10 each time you fill up.
The way to ensure drivers are getting the best deal on their petrol or diesel is to use a comparison tool. By using the PetrolPrices website or app you can now find cheaper petrol in your area in seconds.
According to the Money Saving Expert, the tool could save you £5 to £10 each time you fill an average-sized tank. They claim to have found that in Durham on a Tuesday, petrol prices ranged from 167.9p a litre to 184.9p a litre.
The tool’s website boasts that over 2.1 million UK drivers already compare petrol and diesel prices on the app, and say that you could save over £220 a year. The app covers about 8,500 forecourts across the UK, which users can search through by entering a postcode, town or city.
Petrol prices have skyrocketed in recent months due to a number of factors. The raw price of crude oil spiked as pandemic restrictions eased and the war in Ukraine only made matters worse.
In May the Guardian reported that the prices of fuel at UK forecourts hit record highs, as the cost of living crisis intensified. According to the RAC, the average pump price for petrol reached 167.64p a litre, surpassing the previous record of 167.30p set on 22 March.
