Money Saving Expert’s warning over delays to £150 council tax rebate – Liverpool Echo

by MoneySaverExpert

The Money Saving Expert team has warned some households might not receive their £150 council tax rebate in April.

In England, those living in council tax bands A-D in England will receive a £150 non-repayable support payment to help with a rise in energy bills. It comes after a 54% increase in costs as the energy price cap jumped up.

Residents were told they could expect to receive the payment in April when the scheme was first announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in February. But this is now looking unlikely for some households.

One council has issued a letter stating that residents of the town won’t receive their payment until ‘at least June’ due to ‘technical issues’. South Derbyshire sent the letter to 39,000 people. Another MoneySaver told MSE that their local district, Portsmouth City Council, had told them they would not receive their payment until September.

The guidance issued to councils is that payments should be made by September 30, 2022, but the hope was the majority would receive the money this month. Manchester City Council, for example, told MSE that residents who pay by direct debit should get their payments during the week starting 18 April.

The website advised: “In England, there is not a lot you can do to hurry your council up in terms of making a payment but one way to best ensure you receive the payment as soon as possible is to set up a direct debit now with your council if you can. You can do so by heading to your local council’s website – how to set one up varies but you’ll usually have to log in and follow the instructions.”
