Martin Lewis’ money saving message to anyone with one or more bedrooms – Liverpool Echo

by MoneySaverExpert

Martin Lewis and his Money Saving Expert team had an important message for anyone with one or more bedrooms in their house.

Joined by co-host Angelica Bell on his ITV programme, The Martin Lewis Money Show, Martin discussed various ways for people to save money amid the ongoing energy crisis, which will see bills rise by 54% in April.

As from spring, many households could struggle with utility bills set to go up by hundreds of pounds each year.

One of the segments on the show covered the increasing cost of water bills – which are set to rise by 2 per cent on average in England and Wales.

Martin went on to offer advice on water meters – something that could help to bring bills down for certain households.

He said that if you have for example a four bed house with only two people in it, a water meter should save you money.

Martin said: “If there are more or the same number of bedrooms as there are people in your home if you live in England and Wales – it is likely that a water meter will cut your costs.

“Go onto ccwater.org.uk which is the Consumer Council for water.”

He added: “When you apply for a water meter you have up to a year, usually as long as you are not forced to have one, to change your mind.

“If they say you can’t have a water meter you can ask to have an asset charge which effectively assumes what water you would use.

“The reason this all works is because the rate is based on the value of your house.”

Martin later went on to reveal a “water saving freebie” tip which can save you even more money on your water bill.

“Finally on this, just worth noting, there are hundreds and thousands worth of free water saving freebies, put your post code in SaveWaterSaveMoney.co.uk, that’s not just for water.”

He added: “Even if you don’t have a water meter remember much of the water we use is heated so we pay to heat it so if we use less hot water it helps on your energy bills to.”
